Five AmeriCorps members will be joining the Cabell County Education Matters program to address attendance, behavior and course performance. Each of the members will be located at one of the five middle schools; Huntington, Enslow, Milton, Barboursville, and Beverly Hills Middle Schools. The members will develop and sustain meaningful relationships with students identified as at-risk to encourage improved attendance, participation in community resources, and dialog with teachers about how students can improve their course performance.

This fall, Calhoun Middle/High School will have two AmeriCorps members join their team. Even though the members will be located at Calhoun Middle/High School, they will serve all the schools and community centers in the county. The members will meet with the families of students who are identified as at-risk to identify and resolve attendance issues, provide training on “Love and Logic” a program designed to help students with behavior problems, and play an active role in hosting community forms around dropout prevention.

 

Doddridge County

Doddridge County is excited to have three AmeriCorps members join their Dropout Prevention Team. The members will serve at Doddridge County High School and Doddridge County Middle School. The members will put the team’s plan into action by meeting weekly with students with poor attendance and behavior issues. The members will work with the students and their family to create a plan to create a positive change.  

 

Monroe County

Three AmeriCorps members will be serving at Monroe County Board of Education this year. The members interact directly with students and their families. The members will mentor students indicated as at-risk, play an active role in community forms held during Family Night, and conduct regular home visits.

 

Pleasants County

The Boys & Girls Club of Pleasants County’s Jim Spence Center is sponsoring three AmeriCorps members who will be mentoring students during the school day and at the after school program. The members will lead an effort to encourage community conversation around the dropout issue.

Pocahontas County will have two AmeriCorps members mentoring at-risk students this year. The members will have primary office space at the Family Resource Network but also have space at the local high schools. The AmeriCorps members will be responsible for researching evidence based approaches to improve attendance, behavior and course performance. They will use the techniques learned to directly work with at-risk students.

Independents High School is excited to have two AmeriCorps members join their team this fall. Members will assist with an after-school enrichment program that will improve student engagement by offering fun, learning activities beyond normal school hours. The members will mentor students who are identified as being at-risk due to poor attendance, behavior or course performance.
